If you are a beginner to paper piecing, there are several things you should know first. First, the size of your patch is only an estimate. If you want to use less scraps, position them so that there is less overlap between seams. This will create narrow seam allowances.
Basics of paper piecing
Making patchworks is fun with paper piecing. You arrange and cut pieces in a specified order. It's similar to painting with numbers. You will need enough fabric to cover each piece at the outer edges. If possible, make sure that the pieces are at least 1/4 inch apart.
When you're ready to start sewing, use a pattern that includes a cutting sheet. If you're a beginner, I recommend using Judy Niemeyer's pattern, which you can find in my shop. This pattern contains a numerical listing showing the line numbers. Next, cut a rectangle of fabric. This will enable you to see how the triangles overlap. You can also cut a wider piece of fabric.
Techniques
You can start paper piecing, regardless of whether you are a veteran or a beginner in this craft. Making a patchwork piece is simple and enjoyable by using basic pieces of paper. Most patterns will give you an estimate of the sizes of your patches. If you have smaller pieces, you can still use larger scraps. This will lead to a smaller seam allowance.

Paper-piecing is faster than traditional patchwork. It is much faster than traditional patchwork because it eliminates the tedious task that involves cutting and squaring standard unit blocks. You can also use it to group half square triangles, rather than trimming them one by one.
Templates
The paper-piecing patterns make it simple to create a patchwork piece. These templates come with instructions on how to line up pieces as well as how to pin seam lines and stitch close the template edge. They include seam allowance markings. These seam lines are used to guide you when sewing.
Templates for paper-piecing patchwork come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Free templates can be found online and on other sites. Some are JPEG files while others are PDFs. It is recommended to use templates with at least 1/4" seam allowance.
Hexagon templates
To make hexagon templates, print the pattern at the desired size. Next, trace hexagons onto cardboard. Use a ruler or a cutting tool to cut them. You can then glue them together with a fabric glue.
You can also make your own hexagon templates using sturdy paper or die-cut manila folders. You should use a different type of paper for colored file folders so that the design doesn't bleed onto your fabric. Afterward, use a fabric scissors to cut around the template, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Fold the template in half along one side and then fold over the other. To create a crease, press your fingers on the fabric.

Y seams
You will need to be able to sew Y seams when you are paper piecing. A Y seam is basically three seams arranged in a Y shape when they are seen as a whole unit. A marker that is iron-off can be used for drawing a Y line. You will need 1/4 inch seam allowance for each side of the square that you are going to use as a Y seam.
Remember to sew Y seams starting and stopping at the pattern's line. This will minimize puckering. Also, when you start sewing a Y seam, don't forget to press the fabric down so that it won't wiggle out of place.
